COMMUNITY WIN! St. John’s Convent Guest House Officially Reopens

I’m delighted to share some wonderful news for our community: the St. John’s Convent Guest House is officially open again for bookings following the completion of renovations.

Located at 233 Cummer Avenue, the Guest House has long been a valued community resource, offering a peaceful and welcoming place for rest, reflection, and renewal. It provides simple, comfortable accommodations for individuals and groups, including single and double rooms, shared and ensuite washrooms, inviting common spaces, and access to quiet outdoor areas and walking paths.

While the renovations were completed some time ago, the reopening was delayed due to a permit miscommunication. My office worked closely with the team at the Sisterhood of Saint John the Divine who run St. John’s Convent and Toronto Building staff to clarify requirements and help move the process forward. I want to sincerely thank City staff for their collaboration, and the Convent team for their patience and persistence throughout this process.

The Guest House now once again welcomes guests seeking individual retreats, group retreats, workshops, or short-term accommodations in a calm and respectful environment. This space plays an important role for many in our community, including those looking for a quiet place to stay, reflect, or support loved ones nearby. You can learn more about the space here: St. John's Convent Guest House.

We are fortunate to have such a peaceful oasis in the middle of our busy city. I’ve had the chance to attend silent retreats at the convent, and eating in complete silence was a particularly memorable and grounding experience. I highly recommend this local gem to anyone feeling stressed or in need of some spiritual centering. The sisters at the convent are warm and welcoming, and you can also arrange a Spiritual Direction session, which can be deeply enriching. There is also a prayer labyrinth guests can enjoy.

For more information about Individual and Group Retreats, or to inquire about bookings, residents can contact Jeanette, the Guest House Manager, at guesthouse@ssjd.ca or 416-226-2201 ext. 305.

This reopening is a meaningful community win and a great example of what can be achieved when community partners, City staff, and elected officials work together. I’m proud that our office could support this effort and help ensure this important space is once again open to those who need it.
