Power Outages Around Yonge/Finch

Updated: 13 hours ago

Many residents have contacted my office regarding intermittent power outages along Finch Ave, east of Yonge St. My office has been in close contact with Toronto Hydro for the past few weeks about this problem. I’d like to share an email we received from them on their progress:

“Crews were out again on December 22 and December 29 to patrol along the feeder and inspect our equipment here in response to short power interruptions with unknown causes from October to December 2025.

The major issue identified is increased bird activity and evidence of public feeding around our equipment, which has been flagged for the City directly in case there’s follow up they’re able to provide on the public feeding front.

Construction activities or increased demand on the power grid would not be contributing factors to these interruptions.

To help prevent further issues we’re proceeding with various measures to make the system less vulnerable to wildlife interference, including upgrading the overhead wires on Finch Ave W and Finch Ave E to a more durable tree resistant type and relocating some overhead equipment.

Capital upgrade work here was already scheduled for Spring/Summer 2026 to replace old poles, install more animal guards, and move certain equipment. However, in response to the recent issues, that work has now been moved up to Winter/Spring 2026.”

Thank you to all those who reached out! Your feedback and reporting have accelerated this work.
