Federal Government Renews Critical Funding for Toronto Youth Violence Prevention

The federal government has renewed and expanded funding for Toronto’s youth crime prevention efforts, committing $157.5 million over the next three years through the Building Safer Communities Fund just as previous funding to our City’s efforts was set to expire. Announced by Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree alongside Mayor Olivia Chow in Scarborough, the investment supports programs that address the root causes of youth violence by connecting at-risk youth and families with community resources, training front-line workers, and providing financial supports.

While the complementary Crime Prevention Action Fund will not be renewed, leaving some gaps in research and coordination, city officials and community advocates welcomed the extension as a critical step in maintaining momentum. Since 2023, these federally supported initiatives have contributed to significant progress, including a 43% drop in shootings and a 35% reduction in youth firearm-related violence, underscoring the impact of sustained, community-based prevention strategies.
