DEFERRED TO FEBRUARY 26! As mentioned in our previous update, the Final Direction Report for the North York Centre Secondary Plan was originally scheduled for the Planning and Housing Committee meeting tomorrow, December 3rd.
Given the significant long-term impact this plan will have on our community, both my team and residents must have enough time to review it thoroughly and provide meaningful feedback. To allow for this careful review, I requested that the item be deferred to the February 26th Planning & Housing Committee meeting. With the support of the Mayor’s Office, the Councillor Perks, Committee Chair has agreed to move the item. A formal vote to approve this deferral will still take place on December 3rd. Please SAVE THE DATE so we can get strong representation on February 26!
We are grateful to the Mayor and fellow councillors for supporting this request and look forward to continuing this important work with our community.
It’s also important to note that many resident concerns raised during consultations have already been addressed in the recommended plan:
Traffic infiltration concerns: Proposed street connections from neighbourhood streets to Doris Avenue and Beecroft Road have been removed.
Parks and green space: Earlier concepts for linear “parkways” have been replaced with expanded parks, offering more space for programs and facilities.
Building heights: Peak building heights near subway stations have been reduced—65 storeys to 60 at Sheppard-Yonge, and 55 at North York Centre and Finch. Updates to the Building Types and Heights Map, along with a new Mid-rise Buildings sub-map, provide greater clarity and predictability.
Community-focused growth: Policies in the plan, along with the Community Services and Facilities Strategy, Infrastructure Implementation Strategy, and Urban Design Guidelines, continue to address traffic, wind, shadow impacts and prioritize green infrastructure in both public and private spaces.
ACTION REQUEST: In the meantime, we would appreciate it if you would Read the Report and share your feedback through this survey.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this deferral. We know several community members planned to take the day off to come to City Hall. We believe this 2 month deferral will help us achieve a better outcome.
We will share further updates soon, including opportunities for public engagement. Your input will continue to play a vital role as we shape the future of North York Centre together.
