North Newtonbrook West Streets Plan Drop-In Consultation: Step 1

Last week, I attended a public drop-in consultation at Newtonbrook Secondary School alongside residents and City Staff about how to make our streets safer.

Here’s a glance:

• Ongoing improvements in North Newtonbrook West include:Speed limits on local roads are now 30km/h

• Speed limits on collector roads are now 40km/h

• School Safety Zones have been designated and signed at the front of all nine schools

• School crossing guards at two locations:

  • Drewry Avenue and Norwin Street

  • Cactus Avenue and Moore Park Avenue

Sidewalks, Trails, and Bikeways

• Most local streets are missing sidewalks on one or both sides (roughly 15 streets,) including all or sections of:

  • Caines Avenue, Dewlane Drive, and Moore Park Avenue

  • Hilda Avenue, Homewood Avenue, and Patricia Avenue

• There are no existing bikeways. Construction for the Bathurst Complete Street project will start this year.

At the consultation, we had the opportunity to discuss areas of concern and leave sticky notes with our feedback on a large map (see picture below!). These opportunities are crucial for local engagement, allowing direct learning from residents who use these streets every day.

Here are a few notes we made:

• Poor sightlines for cars turning from Cactus onto Drewry

• Need to stop electric scooters and bikes on sidewalks

• A crossing guard is needed on Moore and Crossen

• TTC buses idling on Greenwin Village Rd
