A Daughter's Light Lives On

There were very few dry eyes at Randall Linton’s book launch for This Little Light of Mine: A Father’s Memoir on His Daughter’s Brief but Deeply Significant Life. Randall, a local community leader and former President of the North York Rotary Club, shared heartfelt excerpts that beautifully captured his daughter Elisa’s spirit and the profound impact she had on her family and everyone fortunate enough to know her. Elisa was diagnosed at the age of four with Sanfilippo syndrome, a rare and terminal childhood disease. Through his memoir, Randall honours her life, her resilience, and the lasting light she continues to shine in the lives of others.

It was equally inspiring to learn how Randall and his wife, Elisabeth, founded The Sanfilippo Children's Research Foundation, which has raised more than $8 million to advance research into this rare disease. I was especially moved by the story of local resident Eleanor, now in her late eighties, who has raised $75,000 by selling hand-crocheted flowers. After being deeply touched by the Linton family's journey as their neighbour, she taught herself to crochet by watching YouTube videos, transforming compassion into an impactful act of generosity and perseverance. What a lasting act of kindness from a neighbour!

I first met Eleanor years ago when she had a booth at the community yard sales I organized at The Peoples Church. Even then, she would spend long hours sitting in the hot sun, selling her beautiful flowers to support this important cause. Her quiet dedication and unwavering generosity continue to inspire me.
