Celebrating Toronto's First Korean Heritage Month

I was honoured to rise at the October City Council meeting to recognize the first-ever Korean Heritage Month in the City of Toronto. This milestone celebrates the profound contributions of Korean Canadians to our city and country.

From culture and cuisine to innovation and entrepreneurship, the Korean community has enriched every part of our shared life. Around the world, K-pop, K-dramas, and K-beauty have captured hearts and imaginations — a testament to the power of creativity, culture, and connection.

Here in Toronto, we are especially proud of Maggie Kang, co-writer and creative lead of KPop Demon Hunters, whose work is resonating across the globe. Since its release in June 2025, the film has become Netflix’s most-watched movie of all time with over 236 million views worldwide. Its soundtrack also made history — the first ever to place four songs in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10, with the lead single “Golden” reaching #1.

During my visit to Korea earlier this year, I was deeply moved by the resilience and unity of the Korean people. After the Korean War, citizens launched massive reforestation efforts that transformed barren mountains into lush, thriving landscapes. Decades later, during the 1997 financial crisis, millions responded to a national gold-collection campaign, donating jewelry and heirlooms to help stabilize their nation — a remarkable act of solidarity and hope.

As the councillor for the ward that is home to Koreatown North and hosts Canada’s largest Korean festival, I see daily the pride, energy, and generosity of this incredible community. I’m especially grateful for our partnerships with the Korean Cultural Centre, led by President Junghee Kim, and the Korean Canadian Business Association, led by President Hyunjun Chae.

Together, we continue to build bridges that make Toronto more vibrant, inclusive, and connected to the world.

Happy Korean Heritage Month, Toronto, and thank you to the Korean community for all you bring to our city and our country!
